Prada Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills, CA | OMA - Office for Metropolitan Architecture

This spellbinding 3-story plus basement flagship store on Rodeo drive has no classical storefront. The entire street front width of the store opens onto the street. An air curtain system achieves climatic separation. After hours, an aluminum panel rises up from grade to seal the building.  The streetfront display windows, located outside the aluminum closure panel, are flush with grade and backlit resin.  All retail is organized around the perimeter with pink translucent boxes floating within glowing polycarbonate walls. The 2nd floor has an aluminum ceiling with a  staggered grid of exposed fluorescent lamps. Green “sponge” walls have a surreal luminous quality.  A minimal reveal in a singular gesture, houses HVAC and spotlights. The third floor is flooded with natural light and movable theatrical lights allow for changing displays and exhibits. At night, indirect fluorescent fixtures mounted to the beams provide a soft glow. The stringent Title 24 energy code required creative lighting solutions since the entire building load at that time could not exceed 2.4 watts/square foot, natural light was a key component of the lighting design.
