MoMA Retail Store

New York, NY | Diller Scofidio + Renfro | Gensler

The expansion of an existing institution with an already iconic look required careful design decisions and collaboration to help guide patrons in a fresh manner. Working with the design team and client, a sequence of unique fixtures and lighting moments were created to give a new identity to each space. By illuminating key architectural features and materials iconic and memorable spaces were created for visitors to lounge, eat, and shop. The double-height retail space invites pedestrians in through a non-traditional retail lighting approach. Monopoint trackheads with vertical and plan adjustment capabilities, provide flexibility without protruding below the custom designed wood coffers. Linear track was specifically avoided to minimize a cluttered “retail” experience when viewed from the street. Patrons can look down onto elegant, floating self-illuminated displays. All perimeter merchandise has integral shelf lighting as well as led wall washing.  The merchandise provides the color on the second floor design store which hosts a newly black painted ceiling and a luminous glass wall at the facade. Faced with a limited budget the design team had to make use of the existing system in place while at the same time expanding upon it. Careful consideration of new LED fixtures was required in order to accent featured products and to balance contrast. The bookshelves at either side of the store as well as a custom display cabinet in the front were all lit using LEDs integrated into the millwork.
