Faena Forum

Miami, FL | OMA - Office for Metropolitan Architecture

Comprised of three separate buildings with varying programmatic functions, the Forum, Bazaar, and Garage are united by their distinct architectural explorations of porosity, and consequently, their relationship with light. The Forum was designed to maximize flexibility so that it could host cultural events ranging in scale from a simple art exhibition to a concert. In collaboration with a theatrical consultant, provisions were included within the architectural lighting and controls to accommodate a wide variety of events. In the Amphitheater, a prolific grid of pinhole LED accent lights provide general lighting throughout and halogen cove lights wash the curving concrete walls that separate the performance and circulation areas. A curving pipe organizes house LED theatrical fixtures for accent lighting and DMX/power receptacles for temporary event lighting equipment.

Linear LED fixtures located at certain windows front light the mural at night and disappear during the day. At the Bazaar, the lighting at the perimeter circulation zone illuminates the red floor and walls when viewed through the courtyard screen wall. The lighting for the Garage was governed by a limited budget and code-driven performance specifications, as well as the desire to appropriately illuminate the custom pre-fabricated concrete structure. Given the angled perforations of the facade panels, a series of wet-location fluorescent strip lights were strategically positioned at the perimeter base of each floor plate, in order to eliminate direct views from pedestrians. This solution not only provides adequate work light for parking attendants, but it also reflects the colors of various parked cars. Similarly, the main car lift on the side of the building utilizes segments of linear LED grazers with shrouds mounted to the backside of large mullions as a way to further animate the functionality of the garage.
