Philosophy

We seek creative, research-driven solutions. As problem solvers, we draw inspiration not only from architectural forms and materials but also from the way the light beautifies architecture, evokes emotions, and creates memorable experiences. Observing interior and exterior built environments keenly, we embrace design challenges and are passionate about exploring unique materials and innovative ideas.

At Tillotson Design Associates, we aim to bring a critical voice to social issues influenced by lighting design. Our ambitions include making a positive impact on environmental sustainability and mitigating light pollution. We deeply value the opportunity to enhance quality of life through our projects - a perspective that lies at the heart of our design approach.

Background

TDA’s collaborations with leaders in the field of architecture have extended to all elements of the built environment. Our varied portfolio adds to the body of knowledge upon which we draw for inspiration. Our diverse staff of twenty-three, with backgrounds in architecture and interior design, combine talents to create exemplary work. Together, our Principals provide over 100 years of lighting expertise. TDA was founded in 2004, just after Ms. Tillotson completed the lighting design for the Seattle Central Public Library with the Office for Metropolitan Architecture.

Collaborating with architects, interior designers, and developers throughout the world, our diverse portfolio includes interior and exterior lighting for corporate headquarters, universities, hotels, libraries, master plans, museums, galleries, parks, performance halls, residences, restaurants, and retail establishments.

Professional Services

We provide a comprehensive range of services, spanning from concept design to the construction phase. In addition to luminaire specifications, shop drawing reviews, and lighting drawings, our expertise include production of meticulous working details for custom fixtures and mock-ups, as well as technical daylighting analyses and 3D computer visualizations.

Our collaborative, team-based approach allows us to produce cost-effective designs in an efficient manner. The accessibility of all team members during all phases of the project assures timely and informed responses.

Sustainability

With increasing pressures on our natural resources, we prioritize environmentally responsible and energy efficient lighting solutions while balancing project design and budget goals. We often encourage our clients to rethink the way they live, work, play and rest. Challenging industry standards is a critical part of our process, compelling us explore the most innovative design solutions, whether it’s challenging the appropriate amount of light required, power consumed, or advising on the architectural materials.

We have been designing LEED projects since TDA's founding in 2004, when the Seattle Central Library became the forty-third building in the US to receive the LEED Silver rating. Since then, we have designed over one hundred LEED certified projects. The Bloomberg European Headquarters achieved a 98.5% BREEAM score against an "Outstanding" rating making it the world's most sustainable office building at the time. Our Tampa Water Street project was the first WELL Certified Community in North America.

Dark Sky Considerations

We believe nighttime lighting must be thoughtfully designed, with careful consideration given to glare and energy consumption. Light trespass onto adjacent and nearby properties should be eliminated. More light does not necessarily equate to better nighttime navigation or safety - excessive or poorly chosen lighting can be harmful. Prioritizing the quality of light with sensitivity and purpose is essential to our work.

We believe it is our responsibility to help manage light pollution in the nighttime environment in a way that promotes and preserves the life cycle of flora and fauna without negatively impacting the safety and security of people.

Inclusivity

As a women owned, WBE Certified business, Tillotson Design Associates is committed to creating an inclusive, supportive workplace that encourages every employee to achieve their full potential. We elevate the next generation of design leaders through our daily practice of mentorship. Mentoring by the guided consensus of experienced staff generates shared confidence, empowers each unique voice, and nurtures a shared office culture.
