The Broad Museum
Los Angeles, CA | Diller Scofidio + Renfro | Gensler
A gradient of light softly illuminates the exterior veil becoming an iconic, nighttime presence within the downtown Los Angeles streetscape. The airy, delicate nature of the veil façade is emphasized by a soft wash of light from in-grade LED fixtures with customized lenses and shielding, accentuating the highlights and shadows of each unique cell. Luminance was calculated and confirmed through on-site mock-ups as integration into the context of the neighboring residential towers, and the stainless steel concert hall was key without creating light trespass and while remaining within the designated setback zone. Horizontal prows at the primary entries are lit with precisely shuttered uplights creating a luminous threshold for patrons to pass through. Discreet halogen accent lights are extended to the exterior to reduce reflections in the glazing maintaining as much transparency as possible. Uplights at the perimeter reinforce the hovering cantilever of the vault as continuous, illuminated floor coves draw patrons up to the third-level gallery space. The continuous trace of light and minimal accent lighting from above guide patrons as they travel up through the vaults allowing the special glimpses into the archive storage spaces to be the primary focus.
On the second level, the vault opens up to allow entry to the Broad Foundation offices and meeting rooms. The elevator, with a luminous floor and clear glass lid, leads visitors up to the primary gallery. The veil dramatically protrudes into the multi-purpose space and is highlighted by recessed halogen wallwashers that merge into a grid of accent lights accentuating the color of the carpet and activity within. Prehistoric-looking olive trees dispersed about the plaza are highlighted with in-grade fixtures. The central lawn is illuminated with a series of framing projectors on high mast poles that are carefully shuttered avoiding spill light onto the adjacent façade. A continuous band of light elegantly traces the front edge of the lawn emphasizing its upward tilt as it floats above the ground plane.
