Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive
Berkeley, CA | Diller Scofidio + Renfro | EHDD Architecture
The reuse of an existing 1939 Press building to house galleries, a small theater, and an art - making lab is sliced by a new structure to house a film theater, library, study center and café. The lighting solutions subtly reinforce the juxtaposition of the gently supple body of a new reflective metal structure draped between two adjacent existing buildings. Interior spill light from the rear, below grade Library and Study Center emphasizes the new structure’s hovering effect at grade. On the interiors, a dynamic public spine is defined through washing of the white walls and even illumination of the white floors. All smooth, white interior surfaces employ flush recessed light fixtures which indirectly illuminate and emphasize the warm, red-lined interior surfaces. The Café is one such space, dramatically cantilevered over the entrance. The textured, striated interior ceilings of the Galleries utilize exposed track, thoughtfully placed amidst exposed structure and mechanical equipment.
