Brown University The Perry & Marty Granoff Center for the Creative Arts
Providence, RI | Diller Scofidio + Renfro
This 35,000 sf new building, completed in 2011, houses dance studios, a recital hall, art gallery, and an atrium with audio/visual projection interface. The lighting was comprised primarily of utilitarian fluorescent pendant lights in the Studio spaces. The lighting strategies are cleverly organized about the shift in the building's floorplates. Point sources were used in the Auditorium, stars, and other circulation and collaboration spaces - differentiating them from the "work" spaces. The lighting strategy in the entry vestibule utilizes in grade linear uplights, creating an inviting interior glow. The unique pleats in the metal exterior facade are emphasized with a minimal quantity of strategically placed in grade grazer uplights.
