The transparent cascading façade of this medical education center showcases the bustling student activity within. Discreet architectural lighting highlights the wrapping wood surfaces that connect the continuous series of spaces on the south side of the building while minimizing trespass glare into the surrounding neighborhood. The lighting emphasizes the vertical organization of typical learning spaces, reflecting the client’s desire for a more holistic and collaborative learning environment amongst students and faculty. The entry, marked by a dramatic sloping soffit that is up-lit from exterior in-grade accent lights, opens directly to the street and draws visitors up through the vertical cascade of public spaces, classrooms, and outdoor terraces. Custom in-grade fixtures with individual LED gimbal heads highlight the whitecascading ribbon at the facade perimeter emphasizing the building's geometry. The fixtures are discreetly integrated into a perimeter service band at the glass façade.

Secondary circulation zones are illuminated by spill light from adjacent rooms with a translucent gradient frit on the glass walls, creating a glowing central core visible from the exterior. Small aperture LED accents provide necessary task lighting for the group study spaces within the expansive ceiling heights. The less porous north side of the building utilizes lensed linear fixtures to meet the project budget constraints and high target light levels required for flexible, state-of-the-art simulation rooms and anatomy labs.
