Stanford McMurty Art & Art History Building
Stanford, CA | Diller Scofidio + Renfro
This 96,000 sf Department of Art building at Stanford houses many disciplines including art history, photography, media arts and digital design. The building is comprised of two intertwining “strands”- one for the students and the other occupied by the faculty with a common central floor that houses their large art history library. Two contrasting lighting systems are deployed within the different strands: exposed, industrial lighting for the student maker spaces and a more refined, finished lighting system for the faculty work spaces. A grid of discreet, recessed fixtures illuminates the central courtyard and emphasizes the undulating motion of the strands as they peel up from the ground plane.
