Rice University Kraft Hall School of Social Sciences
Houston, TX | Rogers Partners
This new 80,000 sf building houses innovative classrooms, faculty offices, collaboration spaces, lounges, and event spaces including a 300-person multi purpose space. TDA used a minimal palette of four fixture types to create a simple, economical yet elegant effect when viewed from the exterior and to reinforce the space typologies. The inner courtyard was a key feature and was illuminated to showcase native plantings and to host informal gatherings beneath a canopy of river birch trees. A large open staircase, with soffits clad in backlit perforated Oxide Red panels, wraps around the courtyard on the inside and acts as a focal point. The transparent skin throughout offers abundant natural light and views into the courtyard while putting the campus learning environment on display.
