White Street Loft

New York, NY | WORKac

The lighting solutions for this 6,000 sf condo in New York City support the architectural concept of a promenade of experiences: a large, open space divided into a series of programmatic “stripes”, each accommodating a different function with the flexibility to join together for entertaining or special events. Moving from most public at the street to most private in the rear, each stripe has its own special materiality and texture with diverse, whimsical lighting solutions that transform the mood from formal to casual as the occupant moves from space to space. The living area, with high ceilings and direct street-front access, has a loft-like, industrial quality. The lighting reinforces this notion with a panelized metal mesh ceiling that exposes all ducts, pipes and fixtures above it. The lighting system is comprised of minimal, low voltage fixtures that match the metallic finish of the mesh. The track and fixtures are carefully centered on each panel and coordinated in plan and section with all mechanical equipment. Matching fixtures protrude slightly below the ceiling at each end of the room to provide art lighting.

This central space, coined the “Shaker Box”, is lined completely with bamboo. It can transform from a dining area to a dance floor when the tables recede or a runway for fashion shows when combined with the adjacent spaces. The Shaker Box is illuminated with a random pattern of accent lights with custom reflector cones to match the bamboo finish. In contrast, the adjacent space has an aubergine color on the floor and wall in the kitchen area with a contrasting white wall opposite in the informal eating area. Wall-washing of the two end walls in the kitchen and eating area unify the spaces. The Family Room, lined in grey felt, is a private cocoon where the family plays games and the children do their homework or watch TV. Ceiling slots, lined in the same felt material, house dimmable white lenses fluorescent striplights. A Marcel Wanders chandelier punctuates the kitchen table with a warm light while the walls of the stair hall in the rear are evenly washed. The stair hall as seen from a hidden alcove carved out of the Family Room space. A perforated metal ceiling with fluorescent lamps above in the powder room ceiling creates a soft contrast to the animated, custom wall paper. The three-story townhouse as viewed from the neighboring property behind. Inflatable wall sconces in the children’s study niches (visible at each end) provide a warm glow.
