Upper Eastside Residence

New York, NY | Gabellini Sheppard Associates

This 14,000 square foot, seven-story townhouse provides a serene backdrop for contemporary art, entertaining and family life. The lighting concept reinforces the floating ceilings through a combination of indirect coves to provide ambient light and even washes of light for large scale art. Sheers at the front façade are grazed with light.  A dramatic, white marble stair is illuminated with one singular gesture: a dramatic vertical light cove.  The sub-cellar marble - lined pool is illuminated with indirect coves and minimal downlights. Frosted glass partitions glow at each on the room adding more ambient light and a feeling of natural light. The fitness center employee a perimeter cove and lozenge shaped lights to provide shadow free illumination. The façade wall allows in natural light and allows subtle views out to a vertical green wall at night.  The lighting solutions are minimal and purposeful, reinforcing the contemporary architecture with a layer of warmth and diffusion.
