Seattle Central Library
Seattle, WA | Rem Koolhaas | OMA | LMN Architects
Designed by OMA and completed in 2004, this eleven story library is LEED Silver Certified. Our lighting work encompassed the exterior and interior, including all interior spaces, the Children's Library, offices, reading rooms, stack areas and the 250 seat auditorium. Complying with stringent energy codes and working within an extremely complex building envelope, the lighting supports the varying experiences within the library and helps to orient the patrons. In contrast to the diagonal building curtain wall, the lighting solutions were simple, graphic gestures of lines, dots, or luminous planes of light that provide spatial identity and help orient patrons throughout this complex building. All perimeter lighting is controlled separately by photocells integrated into a daylight control system. Unlike many libraries, where stack areas are dark, corridor-like spaces, these stack areas, with their luminous ceilings are bright, shadow-free, and light-filled destinations.
