Porcelanosa Flagship Showroom
New York, NY | Foster + Partners
Built in 1918, the Porcelanosa Flagship store takes a prominent position opposite the Flatiron Building and Madison Square Park. This building was sympathetically renovated and restored to create eight floors combining retail and office space plus a roof terrace. The challenge with the lighting design was to create flexibility and a consistent graphic on each of the parallelogram shaped floor footprints and to achieve high levels of illuminance while remaining under the ASHRAE allowance for retail lighting. The exterior lighting defines the historical features and softly uplights the stonework. The lit-effect was made possible through mockups and diligent communication with the Architect and Contractor. The linear light fixtures dim using daylight harvesting, assuring minimum energy usage. The fixtures act as a distinctive graphic throughout the day, automatically dimming at night. The cellar floor has brightly lit vertical surfaces to help mitigate the expansive daylit entrance space above, dematerialized by a mirror-like black Krion panel ceiling. A custom track detail was designed to hold AR111 gimbal fixtures painted to match the black mirror finish of the ceiling. The linear layout with custom diagonal ends on the fixtures complements the angular ceilings and walls throughout. The lensed linear element evenly and softly illuminates the walls and floating gimbals highlight the merchandise revealing the color and textures of the materials on display. The custom lensed linear fixtures, comprised of low wattage LED tape behind the lens and MR16 gimbals integrated into the lens elegantly illuminate the space and feature merchandise.
