Steinway & Sons Piano Showroom and Performance Hall
New York, NY | Selldorf Architects
A world-renowned piano maker’s new flagship store has a welcoming, contemporary feel that draws the public into an interior of minimal yet thoughtful architectural interventions. The custom teak grid ceiling pays homage to the meticulous craftsmanship of the piano lid curvature and is softly backlit by 3000K LED strips lights to help supplement the ample, perimeter daylighting and render warmth within the mostly wood interior. Flush mounted track lighting is integrated between ceiling modules to provide flexibility and sparkle through the use of LED retrofit A111 accent lights aimed to feature the pianos below.
The intimate recital hall includes custom teak walls configured for optimal acoustics that are highlighted with a continuous LED grazer light. The wood slat ceiling, reminiscent of alternating piano keys, houses discreet surface mounted cylinders that highlight the canary yellow seating below. Careful testing of all paired luminaires, lamp sources and controls was completed to minimize background noise and prevent possible vibrations within this highly sound-sensitive space used for critical listening and recording.
At the Concert and Artist Selection Room, an array of custom light discs comprised of perimeter LED tape light and an acoustic PVC stretch diffuser drop below the exposed black ceiling and complement the brilliant, canary yellow floors. The dramatic change in atmosphere is an intentional shift for this room where the concert pianos reside and patrons come to select their instrument of choice.
