Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center
New York, NY | Gabellini Sheppard Associates
This landmarked dining and dancing establishment is at the top of an iconic skyscraper. The lighting design evokes the same feelings of grandeur as the original 1930’s art deco aesthetic while seamlessly integrating the use of modern technologies to promote flexibility within the multi-functional spaces. Guests are received into a long gallery space upon arrival that leads them to the main events space or, at the opposite end, to the private lunch club that transforms into a cocktail bar in the evening. Patrons are greeted by custom alabaster ceiling fixtures within the elevator vestibule and minimal accent lights that highlight the metal banding within the terrazzo floor. White ribbon glass walls are softly backlit by a linear grazer light. An LED cove mimics the tracery details while highlighting the opposing stone walls.
In Bar SixtyFive, a combination of fluorescent and LED coves allows for higher levels in the pavilion during daytime operations to mitigate contrast issues with the abundant daylight. A silver-leafed, multi-faceted ceiling, lit with a combination of precisely aimed LED sources and fluorescent cove lighting, adds sparkle and glamour to the room. Soft lighting at the perimeter and discreet halogen accent lights in the evening allow for uninterrupted views out to the surrounding cityscape.
Layers of discreet architectural lighting enhance the restored crystal chandeliers, rotating dance floor and landmarked central dome within the main event space. Illuminated glass frames at each window draw attention to the breathtaking views. LED point lights embedded within the handrail highlight the original glass balustrades. Theatrical fixtures are recessed in the corners of the ceiling, behind custom designed trim plates recalling the original detailing.
