Duke University West Campus Union
Durham, NC | Grimshaw Architects
The overriding concept for this dining center is a glowing lantern, with soft illumination of the warm terra-cotta and wood surfaces. Full cutoff, exterior LED pole-mounted accent lights provide soft ambient light on the pathways and landscaping, with careful consideration to provide a residential quality without trespass glare for neighboring student dormitories. Soft in-grade uplights are positioned in a random pattern at walkways to extend the interior views out. These also serve to illuminate the underside of the bridge and create a soft glow in the light wells when viewed from above.
The interior food service corridor was treated like a town’s Main Street by keeping the ambient levels low so that light spills out from the adjacent food service and student activity areas. Decorative pendants, sconces, and a signature custom chandelier were used to add scale and sparkle to the Dining Areas. Low-profile linear fixtures concealed in the rafters illuminate the existing ceiling, while ambient light levels are achieved with discrete downlighting to create more layers of light.
