The Wright at the Guggenheim
New York, NY | Andre Kikoski Architect
Evoking Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic design, the dynamic lines of the 1,600-square-foot Wright Restaurant are reinforced through a harmonious relationship of light and architectural form, heightening the Guggenheim’s essential sense of procession. Its white palette, animated by an ever-changing aesthetic, is enhanced by continuous, gentle light that gives the space lift and definition. Low-level lighting, integrated into the banquettes, provides an intimate dining experience, while the “fiber-optic” wood wall and the illuminated edges of the glass shelving provide a necessary sparkle, extended through reflections in the metal-finished wall.
A site-specific, high-gloss sculpture adds a splash of vibrant color and greets patrons at the entry of this 58-seat restaurant. The Wright Restaurant, located in Frank Lloyd Wright’s Guggenheim Museum in New York, is a sophisticated, contemporary dining environment with sweeping curves that evoke the spiraling ramps within the museum gallery space. The challenge of creating an appropriate atmosphere for an artistic crowd was compounded by a two-month construction schedule and a very limited lighting budget. Lighting gestures that accentuate the strong architectural forms within the space provide sparkle and warmth to the high-end dining experience.
