Clyde Frazier’s Wine & Dine Restaurant

New York, NY | Morphosis

The inspiration for Clyde's Wine and Dine was Walt Frazier's athletic history and flamboyant fashion sense. Metal panels with silkscreened graphic prints of his colorful suits animate the ceiling. The edges of the panels are bent to reveal the red color behind when viewed from the opposite side. The all-black plenum hides the ductwork and sprinklers. A simple uplighting solution of pendants—featuring LED chips with exposed heat sinks—was carefully placed amongst the metal panels, enlivening this multi-faceted ceiling. The challenge was to make the pendants disappear while allowing patrons to see the patterns without flattening the panels and ensuring no light source reflected in the polished edges. The wall hugging the entire length of the space features translucent resin panels with black-and-white images of Mr. Frazier's action on the basketball court. This wall hides the clear glass curtain wall, which includes angled translucent baffles inside. From the street, a partial view of the façade reveals the black-and-white resin wall behind the baffles.
