Upper Eastside Townhouse

New York, NY | David Scott Parker Architects

The owners spent eight years restoring to impeccable standards the Mayer 1882 townhouse. David Scott Parker (architect) and Mimi Findlay (interiors historian) carefully adapted the house to contemporary family use while preserving and recreating the 1880s aesthetic interiors. Built on land sold by Charles L. Tiffany and contemporary in date with the construction of the Park Avenue Armory, this five-story house features important furnishings and interiors based on commissions executed by the Herter Brothers, Louis C. Tiffany and Associated Artists, and Daniel Pabst. The entry door welcomes guests through the warm light provided from an antique lantern. Minimal and discreet architectural lighting interventions were carefully layered with antique and reproduction decorative chandeliers and sconces. Some of the chandeliers were meticulously outfitted with uplight and some downlighting to highlight intricate ceiling patterns and provide direct light without the glare of bare bulbs. Recessed trim-less pinhole accent lights with custom interior cone finishes of bronze and brass, blend with handmade ceiling papers to illuminate important furniture pieces and provide another layer of ambient light. Custom designed picture lights highlight the owner's extensive art collection. Backlit stained-glass panels add additional rich layers of light.
