Remai Modern Art Gallery

Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada | KPMB Architects

The primary objective for the design of this Art Gallery is to create a warm and inviting gathering space for the community. The central, public atrium hosts a variety of special events, and the diagram for the lighting stems from the desire for utmost flexibility. A series of dark architectural slots at the wood ceiling is introduced to organize the various lighting typologies including both halogen and metal halide sources. A kit of parts including various optics and lens accessories promotes adaptability and responds to the specific technical needs for rotating exhibition, performance, and public gathering.

Designed prior to the development advanced in LED fixture technology, the project utilizes a combination of lamp sources dictated by programmatic and technical criteria for each of the various space types. Halogen sources are deployed where dimming and an instant “on” function is required such as the dining area and multi-purpose spaces. Metal Halide is used within the atrium and public circulation zones for its crisp, vibrant light quality, which aids in energizing these spaces. The custom slots, furnished as a singular system by the lighting manufacturer, had to be fully coordinated with multiple disciplines to accept other ceiling devices and to accommodate various-sized fixtures and control wiring allowing for a clean architectural ceiling plane.

The exterior follows a simple diagram of stacked, overlapping volumes sheathed in a copper metal mesh with moments of transparency that reveal the major public program spaces facing the river. The metal mesh transforms after dark with powerful linear LED grazer lights aimed at the opaque copper facade behind, turning the building into a glowing beacon for the surrounding downtown area.
