Dean and Deluca Stage

Miami, FL | Büro Ole Scheeren | Ware Malcomb

The “Stage” is intended to feel like a seamless bento box with a lid that, when opened, reveals a very bright, powerful white light. The light quality is intended to be intense and dramatic, though dimmed to a level that is comfortable for the workers who are featured as actors on stage. The lighting solution evokes the systemic nature of a bespoke high tech display system by exposing LED chips in a beautiful, seamless array. The polished stainless steel fascia and base reflect varying views of the dark and mysterious surrounding environment, which is carefully illuminated with track heads creating dim pools of light on each table. The “Stage” was intended to be rolled out as a permanent installation in multiple locations, so it had to conform to varying existing environments. The LED boards were designed to be modular to assure a seamless grid and ease of installation. The chips have a custom wipe-able coating due to the food preparation areas below. The intended effect of the lighting was to create a surreal and compelling interactive environment in which the making, offering, and consumption of food is celebrated and memorable. The Stage encourages social interaction as customers communicate with staff and watch the spectacle of their food being prepared.
