Christ Church United Methodist

New York, NY | Thomas Fenniman Architects

The relighting of this historic church created an atmosphere for worshippers befitting the historic and awe-inspiring architectural finishes and features of the space. The large-scale sanctuary lanterns are the realization of a historic watercolor painting . The fixture design honors the original architect's design intent, with integration of new technology to provide four layers of individually-addressable LED light. A central downlight is surrounded by four satellite components, with carefully-aimed accent lights helping to create an even layer of downlight. Concentric-ring louvers on the bottoms of the lanterns reduce the surface brightness and redirect viewers’ focus to the architecture. Shielded accent lights mounted within the top of the glowing fixture body are cross-aimed to provide soft uplight on the mosaic tile goldleaf ceiling. Spotlights on the balconies illuminate the intricate mosaic tile wall art while a high-performance array of larger led fixtures illuminate the striking architecture of the nave, the altarpiece, as well as providing functional layers of light for the Choir and lecterns.
