Canadian Museum of Human Rights
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada | Ralph Appelbaum Associates
In the introductory gallery and timeline exhibit, front and internally illuminated displays are carefully integrated with digital visuals and dynamic components. The lighting throughout was designed to react to, and reinforce these immersive moments. The guests are welcomed with a large multimedia experience of merged projected video, audio, and thematic 3D installations. Individual sculptures, positioned behind the projection scrim, are systematically lit in concert with the A/V score, creating a dynamic reveal of the opening story, while ETC mosaic control systems, interfaced with custom media software, trigger the various theatrical lighting effects throughout the artist’s sets. Display cases, fitted with the small LED track fixtures were design to meet visual and curatorial needs with minimal visual presence. Continual attention was given to carefully balancing the brightness of the displays to the multiple large and small scale video displays in addition to occasional amounts of daylight.
Throughout the museum, an extensive collection of various lighting sources and effects was used to best address each moment’s particular needs. Among them are ETC theatrical SourceFour fixtures, various LSI halogen PAR38 and MR16 track heads, edge-lit LED panels, and Bruck’s small low voltage LED luminaires with internal potentiometers. Lucifer MR16 halogen pinhole accent and downlights with carefully specified cylindrical housings were installed in metal mesh ceilings resulting in an unobtrusive presence. In the exhibit of Hard Work and Hope, the visitor steps into a pool of light and is merged into the displayed video, in a way that allows them to be a participatory character in the story. Throughout the museum, exhibit case lighting was tuned at the source; none was done at the control system. This allowed for very specific adjustment of light levels within an exhibit, often with various intensities between the individual artifacts on display.
