Dee & Charles Wyly Theatre
Dallas, TX | REX Architecture | OMA-Office for Metropolitan Architecture
The project included the interior and exterior lighting for a theater building and a 20 acre park and plaza. The theater building features a unique design with vertically stacked back of house spaces allowing for pedestrian views into the theater as well as audience views of the surrounding outdoor park and plaza. The glass acoustic enclosure includes blackout blinds that have a faux curtain image silk-screened on the exterior face. These are washed with light from exterior fixtures concealed within the exterior aluminum tubes of the facade. TDA also worked on the lighting of the façade signage perforated into the aluminum facades and back-lit with light pipe. The raw interior spaces expose the building’s structure and the inner workings of the theatre with the light fixtures supporting this industrial aesthetic in their pure, simple forms.
The lighting design throughout the building mimics stage lighting in color, quality and function, with fluorescent light used as “work” light and halogen sources for performance or “people” light. The ramp walls leading down to the Main Lobby of the theatre are illuminated with linear LED fixtures embedded in the paving. The plaza is illuminated with strategically placed tree-up and down-lighting and staggered LED paver lights which visually link the Wyly Theater with the Opera House across the street. In the main lobby, a grid of custom-designed, vertical fluorescent tube fixtures recall the aluminum extrusions of the facade and draw patrons into the theatre. To signal the start of a performance, the fluorescent pendant lights are softly dimmed in sequence to guide patrons to the elevators or up the stairs to the Performance Hall.
