Rhode Island School of Design Student Success Center
Providence, RI | WORKac
The new Student Success Center draws users in with a glow of bold color emanating from within the historical brick façade. The lighting design is clean and vibrant, with low-glare sources in a consistent color temperature to marry the historic with the modern. In the building entry, a soft ambient layer of light provides a clean backdrop and includes a layer for lighting artwork. The light fixtures in the gathering space have a strong visual presence, accentuating the shape of the ceiling, illuminating the orange felt material. Indirect optics create a soft halo effect and also contribute soft warm light when the direct layer is off. Direct optics provide even lighting in the space without the need for downlights. Linear lensed pendants in the halls of the office wings run perpendicular to the line of travel, creating a dynamic visual in an otherwise subdued space. Careful controls programming maximizes the flexibility of the Multipurpose Room lighting, which also interfaces with a temporary theatrical console. The ring of recessed, adjustable downlights in the perimeter wood soffit light the curtains and perimeter of the room, while the ring pendants fill in the middle. The uplight provides enough indirect lighting to navigate the space during a video screening. A combination of recessed accent lights and track-heads provides light for various speaker locations. The mesh metal overhang at the rear of the building is accentuated by warm interior spill light.
